CREATED TO HONOR OUR VETERANS
AND CELEBRATE U.S. MILITARY HISTORY
Reclaiming Our Heritage
was created in 2002 by a group of dedicated employees of the Clement J.
Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee. In the past eight years, it has
grown to the extent that hundreds of volunteers from VA and from the
community now participate.
The event has several goals: to honor veterans, to provide veteran
benefit information, to highlight the architectural and cultural
treasures of the National Soldiers Home Historic District, and to bring
history to life.
TWO DAYS OF HANDS-ON HISTORY,
ENTERTAINMENT, TOURS AND EXHIBITS
PLUS A PRE-EVENT SCHOOL DAY
Reclaiming Our Heritage accomplishes these goals by staging a Civil War School Day and a
two-day, free-admission, family-friendly, positively-patriotic celebration in the
heart of Milwaukee. The weekend event includes a multi-era military
encampment, veteran tributes, entertainment with historic flair,
lantern tours of Wood National Cemetery, guided tours of the buildings
and grounds, and much more. The Civil War School Day serves upwards of
600 2nd- and 5th-grade students while the weekend event reaches more
than 15,000 visitors annually, along with 600 reenactors and many more
volunteers.
There are many activities during the Reclaiming Our
Heritage weekend including the Positively Patriotic Parade, Civil War and modern military medical
demonstrations, a wide variety of entertainers,
fashion shows, a street dance, and many, many more
fun, family activities.
